For SGSN supporting Diameter based interfaces and protocols, instead of using MAP based interfaces for communication between the SGSN and the central SMS functions (SMS-GMSC, SMS-IWMSC, SMS-Router), Diameter based interfaces are used.
When the SGSN supports Diameter based protocol for SMS, the SGSN uses the interfaces and procedures defined in TS 29.338 to transfer short messages between the SGSN, the SMS-IWMSC, the SMS-GMSC and the SMS Router.
Impacts for SGSN supporting Diameter based protocol for SMS to the existing architecture and the reference points shown in clause 4.1, Figure 5 of the present specification are summarized in the following mapping Table:

For the purpose of supporting SMS over SGSN via Diameter interface, the SGSN shall implement the requirements specified in the present specification for SMS over SGSN via MAP interface with the following modifications:
  1. Throughout the text and in the figures, message names, parameter names and cause values:
    • 3GPP TS 29.002 is to be replaced with TS 29.338.
    • "HLR" is to be replaced with "HSS/HLR";
    • "MAP" is to be replaced with "Diameter";
    • "MAP interface" is to be replaced with "Diameter interface";
    • "called party SSN" is to be replaced with "Destination-host AVP" when it relates to SGSN;
    • "absent subscriber error indication" is to be replaced with "absent user diagnostic".
  2. The protocol used on reference point 2 (reference point S6c) is based on Diameter (see TS 29.338). In the short message mobile terminated procedure in clause 10.1
    Functionality of MAP InformSC and MAP sendRoutingInfoForShortMsg are to be replaced with Diameter Send Routing Info For SM Request.
  3. The protocol used on reference point 3 (reference point Gdd) is based on Diameter (see TS 29.338). In clause 4.2 on inter-PLMN transfer:
    CCITT SS no 7 is to be replaced with Diameter.
  4. The protocol used between HSS and SGSN (reference point S6d) is based on Diameter (see TS 29.272). In the alert procedure in clause 10.3:
    MAP ReadyForSM is to be replaced with Diameter Notify Request (ReadyforSM).
