ITU-T

http://www.itu.int/net/ITU-T/info/Default.aspx
ITU's role as creator of the world's most universally-recognized infocommunications standards dates back as far as the organization itself. Since its inception in 1865, the Union has been brokering industry consensus on the technologies and services that form the backbone of the world's largest, most interconnected man-made system. In 2007 alone, ITU's Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) produced over 160 new and revised standards (ITU-T Recommendations), covering everything from core network functionality and broadband to next-generation services like IPTV.

ITU-T Recommendations are defining elements in information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure. Whether we exchange voice, data or video messages, communications cannot take place without standards linking the sender and the receiver. Today's work extends well beyond the traditional areas of telephony to encompass a far wider range of information and communications technologies.

Today priority work areas are ensuring the needs of developing countries are taken into account in the development of global ICTs; accessibility; adopting international standards to ensure seamless global communications and interoperability for next generation networks (NGN); building confidence and security in the use of ICTs; emergency communications to develop early warning systems and to provide access to communications during and after disasters and the reduction of the impact of ICTs on climate change as well as create better understanding of how ICTs can mitigate its effects.

Throughout the course of every year, hundreds of experts gather at ITU meetings, contributing their time, know-how and expertise to the study groups which develop ITU-T Recommendations. With a majority of its membership from the private sector, ITU-T understands the crucial balance between rapid delivery and stability in standards development. The standards making process is subject to constant review ensuring that vital new standards are made available to the industry in the shortest possible time.

The Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) provides essential logistical support to Study Groups including electronic working facilities and meeting management. It also manages promotion, workshops, membership, documents, finance, the website etc. Headed by an elected offical with the title Director, it is the body responsible for providing cohesion to ITU-T's standards making process. TSB is based at ITU's headquarters in Geneva, has many meeting rooms equipped with state-of-the-art meeting facilities and employs more than 60 multilingual staff.

OMTP - Open Mobile Terminal Platform

http://www.omtp.org/
OMTP is an operator-sponsored forum that serves the needs of each and every link in the mobile phone value chain by gathering and driving mobile terminal requirements. There are currently seven full members: AT&T, Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange, Smart Communications, Telecom Italia, Telefónica and Vodafone. OMTP also has the support of two sponsors: Ericsson and Nokia. There are a total of 35 participants from all parts of the industry. These range from Operators to chipset manufacturers and from OEMs to Internet companies.

OMTP works on tasks initiated and led by its whole membership which create requirements for mobile devices. This de-fragmentation ultimately leads to benefits for the whole industry and for the end user.

OMTP currently has activities looking into the areas of the mobile web (BONDI), green devices and accessories, device cameras, visual voicemail, network and battery optimisation amongst others. The OMTP BONDI initiative is addressing the problem that an application written for one phone must be rewritten again and again if it is to work on all phones. OMTP seeks to remedy this problem by helping to address the way in which the existing web 2.0 environment is moved onto mobile devices. BONDI endorses existing web standards in W3C and builds new standard web interfaces and security that will enable new services and create user trust.

Why BONDI? Because like the Australian beach, OMTP wants mobile customers to have the greatest surfing experience whilst making the experience as safe as possible. "It's safe to surf"

NGMN - Next Generation Mobile Networks

http://www.ngmn.org/
NGMN intends to complement and support the work within standardisation bodies by providing a coherent view of what the operator community is going to require in the decade beyond 2010.

The vision of the NGMN Alliance is to provide a platform for innovation by moving towards one integrated network for the seamless introduction of mobile broadband services. In addition, NGMN will coexist with other networks while it facilitates smooth migration from them. The initial objective of the NGMN Alliance is the commercial launch of a new experience in mobile broadband communications and to ensure a long and successful cycle of investment, innovation and adoption of new and familiar services that would benefit all members of the mobile ecosystem.

The target architecture defined by these recommendations will be an optimised Packet Switched (PS) network architecture, which will provide a smooth migration of existing 2G and 3G networks towards an IP network with improved cost competitiveness and broadband performance. Therefore NGMN can be accurately viewed as a further step in the evolution of current industry efforts in HSDPA, HSUPA, and EVDO arenas enabling a personalised broadband access experience and consolidating the diversity of networks operated by mobile network operators.

Furthermore, NGMN addresses some of the key issues that underpin the success of mobile industry but, are beyond the activities currently undertaken in the industry. Examples of these issues include management of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), interworking of different technologies, and operational aspects of running successful services.
